Can a Demilich Become a Lich Again

The entrance to Demi-Lich's lair is southwest in the Watcher's Keep Githyanki Encampment .

A Demi-lich (or Demilich) is immune to all spell effects from levels 1-9 and Weapons less than +4 enchantment level. Any effect, whether from spell, innate ability or item with a spell power level between 1 and 9 will be unable to affect the Demilich. Sources with a 0 (zero) spell power can affect the Demilich. This particular Demilich has forsaken the casting of offensive arcane magic, and concentrates on disposing of it's enemies with two innate spell abilities. These are:

Imprisonment: With a range of 10 feet and a casting time of 1, this level 9 spell power ability from the abjuration school and disabling type - will imprison one creature. The imprisonment effect is unaffected by magic resistance and cannot be dispelled. There is no saving throw. The ability works on all summoned and gated creatures, who do not get a saving throw either. The Demilich can perform eight Imprisonments. (reference SPIN788.SPL)

Demilich Howl: This level 9 innate spell power effect will instantly kill any creature not protected from Instant Death upon a failed saving throw vs. Death/Poison. This ability has a speed of 9, and is a Necromancy Spell School Offensive Damage type. The ability can be blocked by magic resistance. The area of effect for the Howl is basically anyone in earshot of the Demilich, and the entire crypt area where the Demilich is found. This Howl cannot be blocked by Spell Protections such as Spell Turning or Spell Trap. The Demilich can perform more than one Howl. (Reference SPIN789.SPL)

If forced to, the Demilich may attack in melee with a +4 enchantment equivalent Lich Touch. The touch inflicts 1d10 piercing damage, and the target must save vs. Death/Poison or be Held for 5 rounds. Magic resistance can block the Hold effect.

The Demilich can see invisible or stealthing hidden creatures. Non-Detection does not affect the Demilich. Critical hits do not affect this creature. Additionally, backstabbing attacks do no extra damage to the creature. The Demilich can recognize intruders who are protected from Imprisonment if under the Enrage ability. It will skip targeting of that creature with that spell in favor of another if possible. Once the target is no longer under the effects of Enrage, then the Lich may try the imprisonment ability.

Gameplay [ ]

Unlike Kangaxx, this one opens the fight with Protection from Energy. It also uses Death Spell in the basic and EE game to get rid of party summons. Although the Demilich has no memorized spells, the creature can muster those mentioned spells from within, as needed. These are handled by the assigned class script (DLich01).

Due to the narrow and rigid AI script for this Demilich, if your party can survive imprisonment effects and make saving throws vs. Death from the Demilich Howl, then this creature is not too difficult to defeat. The Demilich concentrates on the nearest enemy, and then the second nearest. Any party member that can protect themselves vs. a Level 9 spell (such as Spell Deflection or Spell Trap) will be immune to Imprisonment as long as the spell duration is in effect. Players protected vs. Imprisonment via Fighter kit immunity special abilities or Spell Protections should get close to the Lich and engage in melee attacks with +4 enchanted items, hasted if possible, and beat it to death in melee fashion. Unprotected characters should either hang back, or not even enter the crypt. Again, due to the limited and simplistic script of the Creature, it won't attempt to dispel or remove any protections from your party members. The EE game version did not change this behavior from the original version. If your PC is imprisoned, then it is game over. Other Imprisoned party members can be saved by use of a Freedom spell cast within the Crypt.

Historical Notes [ ]

In historical interviews with the Developers of the SoA/ToB original game, this creature encounter was toned down and the difficulty reduced for the occasional player. This also occurred for the Demogorgon encounter in Watcher's Keep. This was according to playtesting conducted by Kevin Martens, who was the Co-Lead Designer of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and the Lead Designer of Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal.

Mod Content [ ]

Sword Coast Stratagems or SCS makes some profound changes to this Demilich. In addition to all the resistances and innate abilities mentioned above, the Demilich also has 100% magic resistance, and is a level 35 Necromancer. It is equipped with a new advanced script (dw#mg506). The creature has a memorized arsenal of 71 wizard spells, including six level 9 spells. It also has several Wizard HLA's including Summon Dark Planetar, Comet, Energy Blades, Dragon's Breath (spell) and Improved Alacrity. Expect the Demilich to become invulnerable to all energy, magical weapons, and physical blows via insta-contingency. A Time Stop spell will occur, and then a Improved Alacrity as well. The Demilich will attack with Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, possibly in a 3X chain contingency, or just one at a time. Expect a Gated Fiend and or Dark Planetar to come to his aid. Since the party cannot exit the crypt until the Demilich is dead, it will be "kill or be killed" - there is no escape. This encounter is many magnitudes more difficult than the basic or EE encounter. The game difficulty slider or selected SCS difficulty will modify this slightly, but not much.

SCS (version 34) has changed the effect of the Demilich's innate Imprisonment and Demi-Lich howl abilities:

Instead of Imprisonment, it can attack with Demilich Soul Trap: Instead of a permanent Imprisonment, the target is under a Maze Spell Effect. It also drains the target of 4 Energy levels. It bypasses magic resistance. A save vs. spells at -4 penalty will prevent the maze effect, but there is no save against the level drain. Standard spell protections are advised to prevent this level 9 spell from getting through to a party member.

A new version of Demi-Lich Howl can be cast in a 30-foot radius around the Demilich. Any enemy creature will be instantly killed failing a save vs. Death with a -4 penalty. The innate level 9 spell power ignores magic resistance. Spell protections will not prevent exposure, however boosting saving throws or Death Ward would be good counters.

SCS's More Consistent Breach module allows a Breach Spell to affect any Lich, or Demilich. SCS also implements blocking Breach Spells using spell protections that deflect or turn level 5 spells, such as Spell deflection, Spell Trap or Shield of the Archons.
